How to sing when you are on your period? This is a

How to sing when you are on your period? This is a question that many young singers ask me! And I'm always shocked how little information we can find about the voice and the hormones! So I take the opportunity to have opened Aida this week while it was my first day on period to open this topic!

Your voice is affected by hormones. And your hormones change through your cycle. The day before your period (sometimes a few days) or the day of your period you feel your vocal cords thickens and get less flexible. You belly, your back hurts. You feel tired. The soft singing might feel more difficult. The high notes can be more difficult to reach. The chest voice can feel suddenly more powerful.

You have a performance on that day (worst : it's opening night!). What can you do? Tip 5 might be the most difficult!
1. Be gently with yourself. Stressing your body even more won't help. You have abdominal cramps? Talk with your physician about medical help and use a hot water bottle to relax your muscles.
2. Drink water! Stay hydrated!
3. Don't push! Never push but especially during theses days. You might be tempted to push on your larynx, especially if your bell hurts because it will be less responsive for appropriate support. But please don't!
4. Go through the performance one step at the time. Don't over panick about the end of the performance. Your feeling might get better later on with the adrenaline.
5. Accept the fact that this might not be your best performance ever. 150 years ago singer had "rouge days" during their period and did not perform. You are not at your 100%. Just accept it and work all the other days to improve your level so that 80% of tomorrow will be higher than 100% today.

Eine der faszinierendsten Frauenfiguren der Operngeschichte – Carmen – und ihr kompromissloser Kampf für Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung: „Die Liebe ist ein widerspenstiger Vogel, den keiner zähmen kann.“ Doch wie weit ist sie bereit zu gehen, um ihr Leben selbst zu bestimmen?

In den Hauptrollen sind Eve-Maud Hubeaux als Carmen und Attilio Glaser als Don José zu erleben. Galina Cheplakova übernimmt die Partie der Micaëla, Krzysztof Bączyk ist als Escamillo auf der Bühne zu sehen. In weiteren Rollen stehen Anton Beliaev (Moralès), Vladyslav Buialskyi (Zuniga), Simeon Esper (Dancaïro), Jasmin Delfs (Frasquita), Nicole Chirka (Mercédès), Jin Yu (Remendado) sowie Lasse Myhr als Alter Ego Don José auf der Bühne.

Die Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden spielt unter der musikalischen Leitung von Lorenzo Passerini, die Regie führt Nadja Loschky. Das Bühnenbild stammt von Etienne Pluss, die Kostüme von Irina Spreckelmeyer, das Lichtdesign von Fabio Antoci und die Choreografie von Thomas Wilhelm. Es singen der Sächsische Staatsopernchor Dresden sowie der Kinderchor der Semperoper Dresden.
